Why our eSIMs do not require ID

Identity verification (or “KYC”, Know Your Customer) is required in many countries for SIM cards with a phone number — because a number can be used to make calls and send SMS messages. Our eSIMs, however, provide only data: no number is assigned, so no identity registration is required. It's as simple as that.

In concrete terms:

  • No documents to provide: no passport, no ID card, no proof of address.
  • No registration form to fill out on-site, unlike local SIMs in many countries.
  • Immediate activation: the QR code arrives by email right after purchase, installation in 2 minutes.
  • Your original SIM remains active for your calls and SMS (including banking codes).

Where it is most useful

In several countries, purchasing a local SIM requires identity registration in a store, which can sometimes be lengthy: this is notably the case in Turkey, Thailand, the UAE or Saudi Arabia. A Toukan data eSIM connects you to the same local networks without this paperwork — you're online as soon as you land.

Rare exceptions to be aware of

Let's be transparent: a handful of countries apply strict regulations to all mobile connections, including data. This is rare and mainly concerns very specific uses. In the vast majority of 190+ Toukan destinations, no identity verification is required for our data plans.

"No KYC", what it means (and what it doesn't mean)

"No identity verification" here means zero paperwork to get connected while traveling — simplicity, not anonymity.
