What's an eSIM? (jargon-free explanation)
An eSIM ("embedded SIM") is a digital SIM card already integrated into your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you scan a QR code: the operator's profile is installed in the chip, and your phone connects to the network. That's it.
How does it actually work?
Your phone contains a reprogrammable eSIM chip. When you purchase a plan, the provider generates a unique profile, delivered as a QR code. Settings → Cellular Data → Add eSIM → scan: in two minutes, a second line appears next to your usual SIM.
Is my phone compatible?
- iPhone: all models since iPhone XS / XR (2018).
- Samsung: Galaxy S20 and newer, Z Flip/Fold.
- Google: Pixel 3 and newer.
- The universal test: dial *#06#. If an "EID" appears, you are compatible.
Why it's perfect for travel
No shop to find at the airport, no paperclip to open the SIM tray, no French card lost in a bag. Your original SIM remains in place and active for calls and SMS (including bank codes), while the eSIM manages local data. And since everything is digital, you can buy it from your couch the day before departure — or from the boarding line, we don't judge.
The next logical step: eSIM or roaming abroad, the match and how much data to plan for your trip.
