How to install an eSIM on iPhone: a 2-minute tutorial
Compatible with iPhone XS/XR (2018) and later, installing an eSIM on an iPhone literally takes two minutes. Here's a step-by-step guide:
Installation (at home, using Wi-Fi)
- Open the Toukan email containing your QR code (on another screen, or print it out).
- Go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code.
- Scan the QR code, confirm the addition. Name the line "Travel" for easy identification.
- Important: do not activate the line yet — it doesn't consume anything as long as it's off.
Upon Landing
- Turn Airplane Mode off.
- Go to Settings → Cellular: select the "Travel" line for data.
- Activate Data Roaming for this line (mandatory for travel eSIMs — this is normal, don't panic, you won't pay anything extra).
- Keep your French SIM active for calls/SMS: you will receive your bank codes normally.
The 3 Common Pitfalls
- "No network": Check that data roaming is activated on the eSIM line — this is the #1 cause.
- Data disappearing quickly: Disable "Cellular Data" for your French line, otherwise the iPhone might switch to it.
- QR already scanned: An eSIM QR code can only be installed once. If you change phones, contact support.
