How much data for your trip? The real calculation
The good news: you consume less than you fear. The bad news: Instagram and YouTube disagree. Here are the actual orders of magnitude, measured in travel usage.
What your apps really consume
- Google Maps (navigation): ~5-10 MB / hour
- WhatsApp (messages + photos): ~30-80 MB / day
- Instagram / TikTok (scroll): ~150-800 MB / hour
- YouTube / HD video streaming: ~1-3 GB / hour
- Automatic photo backup: the black hole — disable it on 4G.
The Toukan formula
Standard travel usage (maps + messages + social media + a little video): around 700 MB per day. Hence the simple rule:
- 3-4 day city trip: 3 GB, easy.
- Standard week: 5 GB — our best-seller, and for good reason.
- Two weeks / road trip: 10 GB.
- Nomad or video addict: 20 GB, or unlimited if counting stresses you out.
The 3 settings that save your plan
- Disable photo backup on cellular data (iCloud/Google Photos will wait for Wi-Fi).
- Download offline maps and playlists before departure.
- Enable data saver mode — video quality adapts, no one notices.
